Mark
has loved dance music all of his life. When he was around 14 years
old, he started staying up late and recording late night mixes off
of the radio "92Q". Fascinated by how music could be mixed
together he decided to get a turntable. Unfortunately for him it
was belt driven, and broke very easily. This discouraged him to
stop trying to mix, but he still loved dance music. Mark and close
friends (Michael Maxim and DJ Lynx)went through high school listening
to late night mixes and techno rave tapes. He spent a lot of time
in high school trying to get dance routines together with his friends.
Doing back flips, front flips, and assorted steps kept him looking
good while dancing in nightclubs.
When
in some clubs, he kept noticing the same dj was keeping the crowd
pumped. This was Dj Royal T. After a while Mark and his best friend
Joey "Dj Lynx", were buying a lot of mix tapes from this
DJ. Even though Joey had two direct drive turntables and a mixer,
Mark thought there was no way his was going to be able to mix like
Royal T.
A
few years later and fresh out of high school, Mark was introduced
to the scene. His first big party was Sunrise Festival in 1994 which
was thrown by one of the east coast's leading rave organizations,
Ultraworld Productions. Moved by mixes, well into daybreak , he
fell in love with this scene. He left his friends in high school
to pursue a different type of lifestyle. He was in and out of clubs
such as Fever and Buzz and never missed an Ultraworld event for
several years. No matter where he was, he noticed that the kids
were motivated by the same thing. Music.
Mark
started to follow certain Djs and performers to hear them play.
Inspired by Scott Henry, Feelgood, Dj Dan, Chemical Brothers, and
Crystal Method , he knew this is what he wanted to do. Later he
ran back into Joey and was amazed. All of the time Mark was out
partying, Joey was practicing djing. Mark was very impressed by
how well Joey could mix. Immediately Mark asked Joey to teach him
how to dj. They spent many hours together working on scratching
and mixing.
In
1998 Mark knew it was time to buy his own set of turntables. Mark
then started to buy all sorts of records. Breakbeat, house, Baltimore
club and Hip-Hop records were found in his collection. He loved
to dance to breakbeat and Baltimore club so this is what he decided
he really wanted to mix. After a lot of practice he put out his
first promo cd "Get Moved". Then he found himself starting
to dj in clubs and at parties. With a dope ass crate of records
he will be sure to move any crowd.
Currently
his second cd, Dedication, is now out. Dedication is a recorded
version of his set at Buz' "Battle of the Breaks" night.
This will give you an idea of how Mark plays when he is djing. The
records in his set are not just matched for measures but matched
for minutes. Mark strives to move his crowd by constantly dropping
beats in the middle of songs and scratching samples in and out of
build ups. Mark puts his heart into every set, not caring if its
for few or a few thousand people. He knows that when he steps away
from the turntables the crowd will be wanting more. Mark Forrest
has a uncontrollable passion for mixing music. This is felt by every
person in the room, every time he djs.
